In the White House's Retro Arcade Games, the Trump Administration Always Loses

If your legal status in this country isn’t dependent on keeping your job, you might want to run out the clock this Friday afternoon by playing the minigames on offer at the White House’s new online arcade.

These government-issued games are essentially MAGA reskins of old 2D classics.

There’s Rio Run, a Snake-like game where a suit-wearing enforcer collects as many brown-skinned border crossers as possible into a chain behind him while attempting to avoid collision with the borders of the game and his own captives.

Once players have had their fill of active border enforcement, they can transition to Build the Wall, essentially the Trump administration’s version of Tetris.

In a slight twist on the classic game, the goal here is to stack falling four-block shapes into the highest possible border wall. Once the blocks reach the top, a zombie horde overruns the wall and pours into our country.

After you give these immigration-themed games a few tries, I’d recommend switching to Supply Line on your lunch break. In this one, which the Associated Press calls a condensed version of Tapper, players must expel unhealthy seed oils, additives, and packaged foods from the lunch line while letting veggies, meats, and beef tallow through.

When you return to work, it’d be best to move to Trump Savings Tycoon, a Duck Hunt–style game, where the player snatches what appear to be 8-bit nuggets of gold and savings bonds as they rain down from above. Let too many crash to the ground, and the game’s over.

To round everything out, there’s also Flappy Bill, a legislative-themed version of Flappy Bird or Helicopter, where one guides a bald eagle carrying a proposed law through marble columns on the National Mall.

As reskins of classic games, all of the White House’s offerings are addictively fun to play. If they weren’t, this article probably would have been done an hour ago.

The feds’ tweaks to the old favorites do, however, generally make them simpler and less satisfying. Building a wall is less fun than watching stacked blocks disappear once the perfectly fitted piece is slotted in.

Where these games really fail is as propaganda.

“CAN’T STOP WINNING,” blares the White House X post announcing the release of the games. Clearly, they’re intended to tout the administration’s successes at controlling the border and improving nutrition.

But the real object of these games is, like their classic predecessors, to put off an inevitable loss for as long as possible. Eventually, the deportee chain becomes too long to maneuver. The border wall will be breached. Too many seed oils will inevitably make it down the lunch line. Flappy Bill will never deliver his legislation.

The implication is clearly that efforts to control the country’s dietary choices and migrant flows are doomed to failure. The administration’s enemies will eventually overwhelm its defenses.

The ultimate lesson of the White House’s arcade games would then appear to be a libertarian one: The loss of government control is bound to happen eventually.

If that’s the case, what is there to be gained by attempting to control the uncontrollable?

The only way to really win is not to play.
