Review: Outsider Art on Display at a New York City Museum

The American Folk Art Museum does not display the fine works of the masters or conceptual pieces by art-world provocateurs. This institution, located across from Lincoln Center, curates works by self-taught artists who learned their craft outside of traditional art academies.
These outsider artists likely never imagined that their artworks would be displayed in a New York City museum. Between day jobs and family duties, many of them created art simply as acts of personal expression. Each work is the product of individualistic artistic vision, not major art movements or trends, making it difficult to tell whether pieces are from 1776 or 2026.
The museum’s pieces and exhibits rotate regularly, but the main draw is its Americana: intricate quilts, wood carvings, paintings, and collages. Like most American folk art, the pieces are colorful and geometric, but they are hardly uniform. Many are made from local unconventional materials, such as leather and brown paper, showcasing the artists’ resourcefulness and creativity. Starting in October, the museum will open its “Locating Girlhood” exhibit, featuring needlework and paintings by American schoolgirls.
The American Folk Art Museum has celebrated the scrappy American spirit since 1961, and admission is free.
