It Was a Data Center Election After All

It was the data center election after all.
In 2026, we witnessed a stunning, rapid turn in public opinion against data centers. A practical non-issue as early as last year turned into a high-salience moral panic, as voters everywhere said they did not want a data center in their backyard.
As the midterms approached, many commenters (including this one) argued that the data center backlash was also helping to give Democrats an edge in places like Texas.
Just before election night, data center revisionists began downplaying their importance in the election. On X, commenters seized on an NBC News poll showing that only 3 percent of voters said that AI data centers were the most important issue facing the country.

Democratic and Republican campaign operatives both told the New York Post that anti-data center messaging was performing poorly with voters. Candidates themselves started shifting away from talking about data centers.
Then came the election itself.
There were 41 data center-related initiatives on local ballots. Most of these were proposing bans, moratoriums, or additional zoning restrictions on data centers. In all but two of those races, the anti-data center position won.
Exit polls also show a majority of voters said that AI data centers were either crucial or a major factor in their vote.
The only countervailing piece of evidence to the idea that Tuesday was a “data center” election is that Democrats who fronted data centers in their advertising tended to do worse than Democrats who didn’t.

But that could be explained by all candidates turning against data centers. It’s not that data centers didn’t matter; it’s just that it was more difficult for Democrats to distinguish themselves from Republicans by running against them.
In retrospect, much of the pre-election evidence people were citing to downplay data centers’ importance in fact showed how important an electoral issue they’d become.
Sure, the 3 percent of voters who said in the NBC poll that AI data centers were their top issue is a small minority. It’s still a lot higher than 2024, when no one would have said data centers were their top issues.
Moreover, voters’ primary concern with data centers is their potential to raise electricity prices. And in the NBC poll, a plurality of voters identified cost of living issues as their top concern. Clearly, anger about data centers is feeding more generalized anger about higher prices.
Given how lopsided last night’s election results were, it would be silly to attribute Democrats’ commanding margins to a single issue. President Donald Trump, and Republicans more generally, are unpopular on just about every dimension.
It’s no coincidence, though, that Trump has been perhaps the only national politician to say positive things about data centers.
While he’s been wrong about so many things, the president is right about the benefits of data centers. An anti-data center electorate punished him and his party accordingly.
