SAN DIEGO — A fin whale fetus has been found next to the carcass of an adult fin whale that washed up on a San Diego beach over the weekend.

Researchers also determined the mother was 67 feet, longer than initial estimates of 50 feet.
National Marine Fisheries biologist Kerri Danil says gases are created during the decomposition process that push out organs or fetuses, explaining why the fetus was found about 48 hours after the mother was found dead.
Lifeguards are hoping to pull the dead whale off the beach in
Point Loma and into Mission Bay for a scheduled necropsy on Wednesday.

Agencies working to extricate a dead whale from a cove in Point Loma made another discovery late Monday. A fin whale fetus was attached to the dead 50-foot fin whale.
Scientists believe the gases from the decomposing whale may have forced the unborn whale out of its mother, according to Jim Milbury, a spokesperson with the National Marine Fisheries Service.
A necropsy is scheduled for Wednesday on the adult whale. San Diego lifeguards believe their best window for removing it from the cove near the Point Loma Waste Treatment Plant on Gatchell Road is Wednesday at 6.50 a.m.
