A 10-metre humpback whale will be buried on the beach it washed onto in northern Tasmania.
The young female humpback is believed to have died at sea before washing ashore with several shark bites at Back Beach in Devonport.
Locals say the dead whale is an uncommon site in the area.
Devonport mayor Steve Martin says council workers will begin the difficult task of accessing the beach with digging equipment on Tuesday, and the whale will be buried close to where it came to rest near sand dunes.
“Staff will have a four- to five-hour window of opportunity to get equipment onto the beach, dig a large grave near the dunes and bury the whale appropriately,” Mr Martin said.
The disposal of the carcass has sparked a row between the mayor and the state government, with the council asking for $20,000 in compensation for taking on the responsibility from Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service.

Authorities have decided the best whale to get rid of a dead baby whale that’s washed up on a Devonport beach is to bury it.
It’s feared a build up of gases may cause the 9-metre female humpback to explode – after it was found on Back Beach overnight.
Councillors and officers from the Parks and Wildlife service have spent the day contemplating how to get rid of it – finally conceding burial is the most effective – which will take place tomorrow.
Mayor Steve Martin is urging locals to stay away in the meantime
