Rare right whale found dead on beach in Flagler County, Florida

State and federal officials will examine a right whale found dead on a beach in Flagler County Tuesday to try to determine why it died.
The whale, a critically endangered species, was first seen floating in the ocean off northern Flagler County on Monday afternoon. State and federal officials began making plans to tow the whale to the beach on Tuesday morning to perform the necropsy, said Allison Garrett, with NOAA Fisheries. However, overnight the whale’s body washed ashore, Garrett said.

The whale was estimated to be about a year old, according to Barb Zoodsma, right whale coordinator for NOAA Fisheries. A rope with a fish buoy was found wrapped around the whale’s tail. Members of an inter-agency right whale team will work together to try to figure out why the whale died.

Experts believe the right whale population in the North Atlantic numbers roughly 400. Scientists say the species faces a high risk of extinction. Entanglements in fishing gear and collisions with ships are deadly for the whales. Early reports indicate the dead whale may have been entangled in rope.
Pregnant female whales, accompanied by juveniles and other whales, migrate from the Bay of Fundy and Nova Scotia to the waters off the Florida and Georgia coasts in the winter to calve.
At least 12 scientists and volunteers are on scene to perform a necropsy.
