THE animal was washed up on a beach in the Solway Firth near Newton Stewart.

A HUGE dead whale has been found washed up on a Scottish beach.

The creature appeared on the sandy estuary of the River Cree near Newton Stewart over the weekend.

It was discovered on Sunday night near stake nets used for salmon fishing.

Experts now are trying to establish what kind whale it is and Dumfries and Galloway Council officials have been called assess the situation.

There were reports that it was one of several whales that had been spotted in the sea in the area over the past few days.

The carcass is only a few hundred yards from the A75 at Carsluith Village, Wigtownshire.

Jackie Graham, fishery biologist with the Galloway Fishery Trust, Jackie Graham said: “I was going to my work when I saw it and went down to see. It’s huge and we estimated it at around 17 metres.

“People here thought it was a fin whale.”

Experts from the Natural History Museum in London will inspect the whale and try to discover how it died before the huge body can be removed.
