Record number of dead whales in South Atlantic

The mortality of the 2012 whale season was so high that the population of whales in the South Atlantic fell by 3 percent, which is estimated at about 4,000 animals.
The 2012 season ended with a record of 116 Southern Right Whales dead in Península Valdés, an alarming 97 percent were calves.
It was also noted that at least one third of the whales born last season in Península Valdés and El Doradillo died.
Scientists are investigating three possible causes: strandings, sun exposure and the less likely, the constant attack of kelp gulls, who cause the whales deep wounds where virus could enter.
