SoSiK - Art Of Story Telling (Album)

20-year-old Elijah Lewis, known to listeners as SoSiK is preparing for the release of his 2014 official debut album, but in the meantime, he has some music to get fans warmed up. His 30-minute mixtape, ‘Art of Storytelling’ demonstrates SoSiK’s melodic brand of hip-hop, which should appeal to fans of acts such as Lupe Fiasco, with tints of Kanye West thrown in for good measure (see ‘G.O.D.’).

He begins the selection with the short ‘Twisted Poetry (High Times),’ and ‘Day Off’ before unleashing ‘Winter Time,’ which takes a look back at SoSik’s starting hip-hop dreams. Very much in the vein of a soulful 2K13 hip-hop aesthetic, SoSiK is sure to demonstrate his skills as both an MC and a producer as he mans the boards for much of this release.

With none of the tracks clocking in at much over three and a half minutes, this mixtape offers a fine introduction without anything getting stale. In fact, it is notable how much power he manages to pack into such a short selection.

Lyrically, SoSiK keeps matters on the level, never aiming for over-blown gangsterisms or any such fakery, instead opting to keep matters close to the realities of life for most. Of course, there are some standard-issue hip-hop concerns such as chasing women and making money, but don’t expect SoSiK to be pulling guns in his rhymes. Highlights include the insightful post-break-up tune, ‘Worth It’ and the jazz-inflected, ‘Old Man Blues.’ Elsewhere, SoSiK shows some contempt for the competition with the driving ‘Run This.’

While the lyrics flow with a laid-back pace, it is the production that brings things together with some fine instrumentation accenting the crisp breaks and some well-placed samples. Sure, there are moments when SoSiK seems to stumble on his rhymes (‘What Y’All Want’), but overall, this collection shines. SoSiK’s ‘Art of Storytelling’ does a fine job of showcasing what we can expect from his full-length debut album, and it seems he is a name to keep on the radar for next year!
