Alternative Media Sites Targeted on “Fake News” List

In an attempt to blemish the credibility of this website, Waking Up Wisconsin has recently been added to FakeNewsWatch.com‘s growing list of so-called  ‘fake’ news sites. The uncredited authors of FakeNewsWatch.com have asserted that we, along with 41 other popular alternative-media websites, are known to routinely “..take bits of true stories but insinuate and make up other details to sew fear…”.

We, at Waking Up Wisconsin Magazine, are proud to be included in a list of such reputable news outlets, such as the Drudge Report, Infowars, Natural News, Lew Rockwell, our good friends and affiliates from the Rundown Live, and 36 other great news sites. Ironically, an informed American could argue that FakeNewsWatch.com has conveniently assembled one of the better compilations of reliable news outlets.

The site has classified WUW as “click-bait”, claiming that we take legitimate news stories and sensationalize them, as to incite fear in our readers. To this, we say phooey. Perhaps the thought has not yet occurred to most Americans that the truth is often troubling, and requires no “spin” to incite public concern. For example, when we say “the Federal Government is actively funding radical Islamic terrorism”, it may sound really scary, maybe unbelievable even..  but its true. In the same manner, our reports of the growing police-state in America may provoke anxiety in readers, but its hardly fear-mongering when “police militarization” is an actual trend which can easily be researched and verified by anybody with access to the internet.

Our question to the unnamed authors of the ridiculous “Fake News Watch” would be, ‘how does one deliver legitimately sensational and terrifying news, in a non-threatening way, while maintaining accuracy?’. Of course, seeing as the site has no listed contact information, we do not expect to receive an answer.

There is a common-thread which connects most of the media-outlets listed on the site: They are independently owned and operated, and many of the listed sites are run by citizen-journalists. It should come as no surprise that corporate-funded, mainstream moguls like CNN, Yahoo, FOX News and others have been spared.

So how is one to discern the legitimacy of any particular news-site? According to fakenewswatch.com, just go with the big guys, and reject any news source which is not sponsored by corporate giants and special interests. 

But truth shall prevail, and as the “real news” continues to focus on entertainment and celebrity gossip, the “fake news” just might consider other topics, say – a rogue government or controlled media, to be more news-worthy.
