Miccoli: A UK Band That is Brining Indie Music Back on the Horizon

There is often no consensus regarding determining the exact moment when a new genre of music originated. That mysterious moment in which someone about whose identity is never usually reached an agreement either twists his instrument one ordinary afternoon, if something fails, and suddenly invents new music.

A style that did not exist until that day and whose origin, as a rule, ends up being diluted among the many secret dates in history.

Not even the birth of rock is without discord. Its name, rock, and roll is a nautical term referring to the boats’ movement adopted by the gospel and ended up going from the churches to the street at the beginning of the 20th century, being adopted as a synonym for dancing and as a sexual metaphor.

The style, a fast-paced blues that resulted from the fusion of black music and settler folk tunes, was first associated with the expression when Roy Brown released the song “Good Rocking Tonight” in 1947.

Two years later, Jimmy Preston would record the song “Rock the Joint,” which, in turn, Bill Haley would cover in 1952, causing journalist Alan Freed to refer to the new genre as “rock and roll” and Haley was considered his progenitor.

Some do not agree with all this and offer a different version of when, how, and where the rock was invented.

The origin of indie, however, is beyond doubt. There are no controversies around him like those in the case of rock: if Roy Brown’s style was already rock and roll or not, if Fats Domino and Bo Didley should share paternity with Bill Haley or not, if Roll Big Joe Turner’s ‘Em Pete ‘ – and not ‘Rock the Joint’ – was actually the first rock song and not a mere precursor, if the invention of the style should be attributed to Preston himself and not Haley, and so on.

In indie, this does not happen. There is no debate as to its origin. And there isn’t because everyone knows that the Strokes invented indie.

Every once in a while, a new class of youths appears in the world who understand that they are not like others. Unfortunately, those whose intellectual concerns are not superficial and straightforward, like everyone else’s, but deep and relevant.

They are people who are condemned to identify and understand better than anyone the artistic quality of the marginal. To lack the same preferences as most. A sensitive youth. A different youth. Haunted by a vast —and inaccessible to the rest— inner world.

And every generation of moderns needs its usual style of music. Something that reflects his curse and uprooting and his minority character and his formidable erudition on issues of general culture.

The indie in the past few years become a ghost. A musical genre without gender that its people have repudiated as if it were a plague. A spectrum that is still heard from time to time wandering through rock basements. This was confirmed by The Guardian in an article a few years ago entitled “The slow and painful death of indie. At this point, there was hardly anything left.

It became such a small, marginal movement that we are almost certain that the next generation of moderns will be fascinated by it. Because it is once again cursed and minority enough to be sponsored by a new batch of sensitive and special young people. They would adopt him and elevate it again from its mysterious and strange wasteland.

And the indie wheel turned again. Thanks to the Brummie band, Miccoli. And there came a time when it will be so famous that it will start over. This Alternative/Indie Pop group is growing, and growing steadily having been featured on VH1 and Bliss TV. In fact, if you just happen to tune in BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 6, you will quite a few times stumble upon their tracks.

Miccoli is a group of three siblings – twin brothers Adriano Miccoli (vocal and acoustic/electric guitar) Alessio Miccoli (piano, vocal, and acoustic guitar) and sister Francesca Miccoli (vocal, piano, and harmonica).

As suggested above that Indie groups are always in the muse of putting forth unique sounds, this band here has a benchmark which follows in their tracks and maintains a level of sound that is specially attributed to them.

Miccoli members sing in a constant rhythm, making their vocal arrangements to blend, and exhibit a single stream of sound. It has become their unique identity so far, and an exciting notion about a band that has rocked all of Birmingham to settle in London now.
