When Journalists Fail the Public......

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

There was a time when journalism meant uncovering the truth, challenging power, and giving voice to the voiceless. But in an age where clicks matter more than context, that mission has eroded into something darker: narrative management disguised as reporting.

Take WCLO Radio in Janesville WI, for example.

In 2018, I was convicted on five counts of disorderly conduct. That much they reported. But when those convictions were later overturned—on constitutional grounds—suddenly, the silence was deafening. The ruling wasn’t buried in obscure legal jargon. It was a clear affirmation of my First Amendment rights. The judge ruled that filming police officers and using strong language toward them was protected speech.

But WCLO didn’t update the story. They didn’t investigate. They didn’t even ask for a comment. Their reporter showed up with a notepad, scribbled what he wanted, and left—never bothering to follow up or correct the record. And when I reached out recently, they agreed to add a “note” to the old story if I provided documentation, as if the burden of truth falls on the subject of the report instead of the reporter.

This isn’t journalism. It’s malpractice.

The media’s power lies in what they choose to highlight and what they deliberately omit. Mentioning the original charges without acknowledging the successful appeal isn’t just lazy—it’s misleading. It perpetuates a false narrative that damages reputations and public understanding. It paints activists and dissenters as criminals, even when the courts have said otherwise.

We must demand more from our local press. Because when journalists abandon truth in favor of tidiness, they stop informing the public and start shaping public perception. And that, in the end, is not just bad reporting.

It’s propaganda.
