Find A Reiki Practitioner

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

It’s relatively easy to find a Reiki practitioner, but deciding whether a particular therapist is right for you can be a little more difficult. How you proceed is also dependent on what it is you want to get out of your Reiki session. Do you want a quick ‘sampler’ to find out whether this kind of therapy is right for you? Or perhaps you’re interested in practicing Reiki yourself, but want to experience first-hand what it’s about.

Recommendations

It probably goes without saying that the best way to find a Reiki practitioner is through the recommendations of people you trust, and who have had a session with the practitioner in question. This doesn’t necessarily mean that this particular therapist will be right for you, of course, but it’s a good starting point.

You may even know of a friend or family member who practices Reiki, and who might be prepared to give you an informal session in your home. This can give you a feel as to what to expect, although the results may not be as good as with a practitioner who has been trained to 2nd. Degree Reiki or above.

If you don’t know of any family and friends who have had a Reiki session, then you could try asking your doctor, or at your local health centre. Many medical professionals these days embrace Reiki and other forms of complementary healing therapies.

Holistic health events are becoming more popular, so it might be worth going along to these and chatting to people there to see if you can get any recommendations.

Reiki Professionals Associations

Another way to find a Reiki practitioner is to check with one of the professional associations which exist. As the popularity of Reiki grows, so more therapists are establishing businesses and are joining these associations to enhance their professionalism.

At the moment, there isn’t a universally accepted training standard for Reiki practitioners, but if you find a therapist through a Reiki association you will know that they insist on their members abiding by strict codes of conduct.

Two associations you might find useful are:

1) The UK Reiki Federation

This federation was established in 1999 to promote best practice in the delivery of Reiki to the public, and their website lists Reiki practitioners by region.

2) The International Association Of Reiki Professionals

This association has thousands of members in more than 50 countries.

Things Your Reiki Practitioner Should Do

There are certain things you should expect from your Reiki therapist:

  • They must explain fully, either verbally or in writing, all the procedures involved in the Reiki treatment, and they must never claim to ‘cure’. They should make it clear that they aren’t medical professionals, and won’t be able to diagnose conditions nor offer a prognosis. They should always respect your choices, and must not undermine your faith in any other kind of treatment.
  • They must respect your confidentiality at all times.
  • They must display or make available any certificates or other qualifications they have.
  • Your Reiki practitioner may ask you what medical treatment you have or are receiving, but it’s up to you whether you give this information.
  • Your practitioner must not request that you remove any clothing apart from your coat and footwear.

Questions For Your Reiki Practitioner

Any practitioner will have studied Reiki to the first degree at least, and ideally to the second degree. They should also have been using Reiki regularly, preferably for at least a year, including treating themselves. This is important since it’s believed Reiki becomes stronger the more you use it – rather like exercising a muscle. To channel effective healing energy for their clients, the therapist’s own vibrational energies should be as high and clear as possible.

  • Ask the practitioner you’re considering using about their own journey with Reiki. How did they become interested in it? Why were they drawn to it? Why did they feel the need to become a Reiki therapist?
  • Ask if the practitioner uses any other healing systems alongside Reiki, and how they integrate them with their Reiki practice.
  • What do they see as the value of Reiki, especially for you? Does their answer resonate with your own view of Reiki and what you want to achieve through it?
  • How many sessions does the Reiki practitioner think you’ll need? Some recommend a series of appointments, especially for chronic conditions, whilst others leave it open for you to decide, depending on how you think the treatment is going and whether you believe you’re getting some benefit from it.
  • How easy is the practitioner to get to? Think about the time and costs involved in travelling, and whether you would be prepared to bear these for the long term, if necessary. Would the practitioner be prepared to travel to you? Some are, bringing mobile massage tables with them. This will add to the cost of the treatment, but may be an option if you find it difficult to get out and about.

When you’ve considered all things, though, the deciding factor on finding a Reiki practitioner should be your own instincts. Trust them. Simply ask yourself, do you feel comfortable with this person? If you don’t, then don’t be afraid to look for someone else.
