Reiki Treatment – What To Expect

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

You may have decided to book a Reiki treatment for any number of reasons; perhaps you’re suffering from acute pain you want to alleviate, or you need help with a chronic condition that doesn’t seem to be improving no matter what else you try. You may want a relaxing therapy which takes away the stress of your everyday life, or it could be that you have an interest in practicing Reiki yourself and you want to sample what it’s like first-hand.

What Happens At The Start Of The Treatment?

Before the treatment starts, your practitioner will give you a short explanation about it and may ask you to tell them something of your medical history – although you won’t need to go into any detail here. Reiki therapists aren’t trained to diagnose or offer prognosis and won’t comment on any medical treatment you’re receiving. The aim of this initial chat is simply for your therapist to establish the best way to help you using Reiki therapy.

What Does The Treatment Involve?

Your Reiki treatment will very often be given in the therapist‘s own home, although sometimes there will be treatment centres in hospitals, attached to cancer care units for example. Wherever the treatment takes place there will be a relaxing atmosphere, created by dimmed lights, soft meditative music in the background or perhaps water fountains; apart from being a relaxing sound in itself, qi energy is always stronger near running water.

You will normally be lying down for the treatment, perhaps on a massage table, and you’ll remain fully clothed, apart from your shoes. For comfort, it’s a good idea to wear loose clothing made from natural fibres such as cotton, wool and linen.

The treatment itself involves your practitioner placing their hands very lightly on your body in a variety of positions. Some practitioners, though, don’t touch the body, preferring to ‘hover’ their hands a few inches above. This makes no difference to the effect of the Reiki energy. When touch is used, it’s gentle, light and comfortable; there isn’t any massage or manipulation.

Many practitioners use a predetermined sequence of hand placements, covering the front and the back of the body, and keeping them in each position for between 2-5 minutes before moving on to the next. Other therapists, who perhaps are more intuitive, will move their hands to the areas where they feel the energy is needed.

What Will I Feel During A Reiki Treatment?

Everyone experiences Reiki treatments differently. You may feel tingling or warm sensations beneath your practitioner’s hands; you may react by sneezing, laughing or coughing.

And because Reiki heals at all levels, you may find that emotions are stirred up as part of the healing process. It’s also possible you’ll get healing reactions such as a headache or flu-like symptoms. These will be short-lived though, and they’re nothing to worry about, they’re simply the effects of energy shifting and they indicate that healing is taking place.

If nothing else, you’ll certainly feel a sense of peace and relaxation and may fall into a deep and refreshing sleep. After the session you’ll feel rejuvenated and energised.

What Happens After The Treatment?

Sessions usually last about an hour, and afterwards your practitioner will ask you how you felt during the treatment – this is a kind of ‘de-brief’ if you like. Following your session, it’s important to rest and drink plenty of water.

The Cost Of Reiki Treatment

The cost of Reiki treatment should be comparable to other complementary therapies, such as massage, acupuncture or aromatherapy. You can get a good idea of what professionals in your area are charging by searching online, or looking in directories such as the Yellow Pages.

Everyone’s circumstances are different, so sometimes you will see immediate and obvious results following your Reiki treatment. At other times little will seem to be happening. But generally speaking you can get the greatest benefit from Reiki by having a monthly treatment to ensure your energy is running as it should do.

A good Reiki practitioner doesn’t ask you for medical background….they don’t have to, it doesn’t matter.

I have noticed “westernized” Reiki practitioners tend to want to tell you your medical issues… (I avoid these people), they are not doctors, and can only tell you of areas they notice need more energy..

Reiki healing can be done sitting, lying down, or from across the planet….. Distance healing.

After 15 years of practicing I can tell you that one on one appointments will (probably) come with a small fee, usually $50-60 for a 50-60 minute session.

If you can find a Reiki healing circle near you, its free.
Free as in they ask only for donations… and many usually attend. Its a great way to find a practitioner that you like.

I personally prefer the weekly healing circles, monthly is simply not enough.

      What worked for me?
In the beginning, (the first few weeks) I found it difficult to sit still, relax, and free my mind for 50 minutes.
Eventually you learn to relax… something we never do.
Our bodies never get peace and quiet in this crazy world.

I didn’t really notice anything until after a few months of once a week sessions, and I took a night off and didn’t go…..
Wow….skipping that session caused me to realize just how tense I had become all week, and missing my session meant the tension was not relieved…. and it was very obvious.

I tried really hard not to miss a session after that.

      I am a Reiki practitioner…level 3.
I have been complimented repeatedly by those I work on.
I have witnessed amazing immediate healing, and slow healing.
The most profound example I can share without going into long stories was when I worked on a friend with Parkinsons disease.

During the session all trembling and shaking stopped, his body was fully at peace. It was amazing. Then the phone rang and disrupted us, and his body immediately began to tremble again.

When he hung up we looked at each other and smiled, I said “want to do it again?” He said “yes please, that was great.”

Once we started again, the shaking again ceased until the session was over. According to David, our Reiki sessions were the only time his body had stopped trembling since the Parkinsons began years before.

Reiki is a positive flow of universal healing energy, the most powerful energy around….love.

      One thing is for sure.
Reiki can not hurt you, but it might help you.
You have to be willing and want the energy for it to work.

For those interested in trying it, find a weekly circle that only asks for donations…be sure to attend no less than 4-6 times regularly before making any decision.

      Enjoy :)
