The History Of Reiki

Reiki is a unique healing method with a fascinating history, but there are many different versions of the origins of Reiki found in many texts. The Japanese word Reiki has the “ki” that is similar to the Chinese word “chi”, meaning universal life force energy. The Reiki healing techniques channel this energy to provide the healing, and this method of healing was discovered before the turn of the 1800s by a Japanese Christian minister.

History of Reiki: Dr. Usui

Dr. Usui was a Christian minister in Japan, and the head of a Christian school for boys in his home country. When he was interacting with his students, he asked if they believed in the miracles that Christ did. They told him that they did, but both he and his students agreed that they had no idea how the miracles were done. At this, Dr. Usui set out to learn more about the methods Jesus had used to heal, and his studies led him to Christian schools in the U.S. None of these schools could provide him any answers, so he turned to Buddhist teachings.

The Buddhist writings stated that Buddha had also done healing miracles, but he could find no one who knew how the healing was achieved. He searched for years with no result, until he finally decided to meditate for 21 days in order to find the answers. On the 20^th day of his meditation, he is believed to have had a mystical revelation that showed him how to perform the healing.

When he came down from the mountain, he performed what are believed to be the first 4 miracles: healing his starvation, a sickness his Abbot had contracted, a broken toenail, and a painful tooth. He passed the next 7 years of his life living in the poorest section of the capital city, Tokyo, where he healed the sick using the Reiki techniques. However, when beggars came back to live the easy life in the poor section, he know he had to teach as well as heal.

Origins of Reiki: Dr. Hayashi

He began to attract attention when he stood in city squares with a lit torch in daylight. When people told him a torch wasn’t necessary, he told them that he was using it to attract those that were interested in healing themselves. One such person was Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a naval commander. He was so impressed by Dr. Usui that he began to travel with him in order to learn the secrets of healing and teaching. He carried on the work after Dr. Usui died, and he later opened a clinic near the Japanese Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

Practicing Reiki required acceptance by the Reiki masters, as well as the promise to use and practice Reiki on a daily basis. Dr. Hayashi died in 1940 before Japan joined World War II, and his mantle was passed on to Mrs. Hawayo Takata.

History of Reiki: Mrs. Takata

Mrs. Hawayo Takata was of Japanese descent, but she was born in Hawaii. She was visiting Japan when she became very ill and had to be rushed to the hospital. When she tried to find an alternative to surgery, she was told about Dr. Hayashi’s clinic where she was healed. She eventually persuaded Dr. Hayashi to teach her despite his reluctance, and she reached the upper levels of Reiki practice. She then returned to Hawaii, where she learned the same lesson as Dr. Usui about how the treatments must be valued. Dr. Hayashi came to Hawaii where he completed Mrs. Takata’s training, after which time he passed on the leadership of the organization to her before he died. She went on to train 22 other Reiki masters before her death in 1980.
