Reality versus expectations

Do we shape our own reality? So much ‘new age’ or quantum thinking tells us yes: our thoughts become our reality, so how we perceive things is important. Others say not, citing the luck of the draw or karma. Is there proof out there, one way or another?

New research from North Dakota State University suggests that our thoughts affect our perception and therefore our experience of life.

Participants were personality tested for hostile attitudes and behaviour and also asked to give a preference for either of the colours red or blue. Those with a more hostile attitude preferred red over blue.

The same participants were also shown images which were faded with no dominant colour so they could be perceived as either red or blue. Those participants with a high hostile rating in the personality test perceived the images as red whereas participants who were more complacent perceived the images as blue.

I will take this one step further and say that our expectations, which will be based on our attitudes and beliefs, can affect our perception and experience of a situation or person.

My next paragraph was going to say that I wasn’t sure how this information could help apart from knowing that our perceptions are built on shaky ground. In fact as I was writing the last paragraph, a particular situation that’s in my life right now came to mind and it’s something I think I’ll have to revisit.

Maybe there’s something in your life too that’s based on the wrong premise? Recognising false or shaky perceptions is one thing. Putting them right is another.
