Weekly Commentary: Are there consequences to waiting for the gizmos? Bennett

This time Israel really is working on an unprecedented game changing gizmo.

A brilliant scientist came up with a revolutionary understanding of light
and this knowledge is being implemented in powerful lasers which require on
a fraction of the energy input normally required.

Thanks to the dramatically lower energy requirements, we are going to have a
suite of gizmos which can destroy targets not only from a ground base but
also a broad array of airborne platforms. There may even be a gizmo which
can protect a group of tanks from incoming missiles. I would even go so far
as to note that while the Geneva Convention prohibits blinding lasers it
does not outlaw using a powerful laser to kill enemy soldiers.

Given that these gizmos will be exclusively in the hands of the IDF in the
coming years, one can appreciate why decision makers may choose to postpone
operations and conflicts until we have deployed them.

But there is a downside.

If for the time being we abandon the big stick and rely on talk our enemies
could interpret this as a weakness and plunge us into a destructive malaise.

Last week we showed the big stick with many operations in Judea and Samaria
and the unprecedented arrest of hundreds of rioters on the Temple Mount.

Now it seems we have dialed down our activity in Judea and Samaria and
rioters are being treated with gloved hands while Jewish access to the
Temple Mount has apparently been blocked for the remainder of Ramadan.

Again. I understand that there are gizmos on the way.

But abandoning the big stick could still be a very dangerous policy.
