Bridge Refits For Foreign Military Vehicles? - Spartanburg County S.C. (7) Bridges Crossing Over Interstate 26 Are Being Raised to Over 16' in Clearance Height to the Interstate Below.

Steve,
My inquiries to local media outlets have gone unanswered so I thought I would see if any of your readers and listeners across the country are noticing the same thing.

In Northern Spartanburg County in South Carolina, seven (7) bridges crossing over Interstate 26 are being raised to over 16′ in clearance height to the interstate below. None of these bridges were even close to the 13’6″ clearance height that tractor-trailers require. Some of these bridges were even at 15’10″ so they are only being raised a very small amount. Three (3) of the bridges have entrance and exit ramps to the interstate so oversized loads could easily bypass if clearance were an issue as they have always done, but the expense to raise the bridges is still being spent. This project has been underway for approximately four (4) months and already half-way finished with the three (3) bridges having interstate access completed. These are Hwy 11, Hwy 292, and Newcut Rd.

All the media will report are standard press releases stating that the bridges will be closed for repairs between certain dates. No word of who is funding these projects or why has been mentioned. Common reasoning for the bridge raising is that it has to be military in nature, but nothing concrete is known.

If this is happening elsewhere in the country I would like to know. Also, I would be curious if there are any breeds of military vehicle (especially non-domestic) that require 16′ clearance?

A simple Google search on the history or purpose of the Interstate Highway system in America will provide plenty of information and would have been enough for you to shelve this article before seeing the light of day.

FYI – the Highway System was commissioned by Dwight D. Eisenhower and funded largely by Federal govt. to protect the country and allow commerce to grow. Of course it would follow that if military equipment were to get bigger, ramps would have to become larger and bridges raised. Makes sense, doesn’t it, so why the attempt at sensationalism and fear mongering over ongoing road maintenance?
