RETIRED ARMY COLONEL ADMITS GUILT NORBERT VERGEZ CUTS DEAL WITH THE FEDS – SAYS HE MADE FALSE STATEMENTS AND DIDN’T DISCLOSE FUTURE EMPLOYMENT DEAL SET UP WITH GOVT. CONTRACTOR WIFE GOT ROLEX WATCH – VERGEZ RECEIVED $30,000 CHECK - CROOKED 0-6 FACES UP TO FIVE YEARS IN PRISON WHEN SENTENCED.

It was quite a retirement party in November 2012 at Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal..

Army COL Norbert Vergez was the man of the hour. The senior officer was finishing up a stellar 25 year career. He was presented the Legion of Merit and the base newspaper, The Redstone Rocket, hailed him with this headline: RETIRING COLONEL SET NEW STANDARD AS PROJECT MANAGER.

What the writer didn’t know was the colonel was a crook.

ADMITS HE LIED ON ETHICS FORMS

This week Vergez stood in shame in federal court to plead guilty to providing false official statements and engaging in felony conflict of interest.

The 49 year-old Arizona native, who oversaw the contracting program at the Arsenal, admitted he lied on ethics forms when he hid the fact he pocketed a fat $30,000 check from a potential employer and his wife got an unreported Rolex wristwatch.

Responsible for contracts involving helicopter procurement, Vergez made sure a Mesa, Az. based helicopter company got a big contract from Uncle Sam. 

The bird colonel was looking forward to a position with MD Helicopters as a vice-president.

Now the retired senior officer faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced later this year. But sources say that Vergez’s plea bargain with prosecutors might enable him to avoid any time behind bars.  Stay tuned.

U.S. Attorney for Alabama Joyce White Vance had nothing good to say to reporters about the disgraced officer.

“COL Vergez placed his own financial ambitions and personal loyalties above his duties as a member of the Armed Forces,” Vance said. “In doing so, he betrayed the U.S. Army values of honesty, integrity and selfless service, which are the hallmarks of our military.

“This prosecution highlights our commitment to hold responsible those who, by word or deed, corrupt the government contracting business.”
