What Memorial Day means to me

I’m not sure what Memorial Day means to you. For me, quite honestly, it had typically meant that the Bank and Post Office was closed, putting things on hold for another day, and we’d maybe BBQ. However, this year, we’re really feeling things a bit differently.

My wife has friends all over the globe and from time to time she shares little snippets about her friends, their lives, etc. Nothing prepared me for seeing my wife in tears, barely able to speak as she gestured to her laptop;
Michael had been killed.

This incredible, bright star, a beautiful young man – killed while serving his country. We both just cried, how could you not?

You see, Michael Cathcart was the apple of his mother’s eye, the best son anyone could ever dream of having. He earned more medals than a young man might or should earn, and in the end, he lost his life.

His hard-working mother lost her precious son – the one who called her for no reason, just to tell her he loved her, to thank her, to send her flowers and who cared so deeply about his kid sister.

Well, when Michael was killed, Jeanne Cathcart still went through the motions; working hard at her job, feeding a local homeless man, trying to grapple with such loss, befriending a seagull she named “Honey” and then planting countless flowers in a park dedicated to Michael there in Bay City, Michigan.

Jeanne went out of town to attend a celebration honoring her son at Fort Bragg, NC, for Memorial Day weekend and her new used car caught fire. She got out with nothing but her life.
