Countries with 80% of the world’s population back Russia’s approaches, says Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The minister noted that Russia as an important guarantor of international security will continue facilitating “the strengthening of fair, democratic initiatives of the international life.”

Nations that have over 80% of the global population living within their borders agree with and openly support Moscow’s foreign policy line, Russia’s top diplomat Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with the Trud newspaper.

“The overwhelming majority of countries that make up over 80% of the worldwide population are receptive to [Russia’s] international political steps, support Russia’s approaches to the key problems of today’s world,” he said.

The diplomat added that Western countries, with whom Russia still has a difficult relationship, represent a very small and increasingly insignificant part of the global community.

The chief diplomat noted that as an important guarantor of international security Russia will continue to facilitate “the strengthening of fair, democratic initiatives in the international life”. For those purposes, Russia will “coordinate steps with its allies and adherents” further on.

“We expect our Western colleagues, chiefly the US, to understand that it is essential to give up on the logic of provocation and confrontation at some point.

That will open up principally new possibilities for us in the fight against modern challenges and threats, the bulk of which are trans-national and requires the joint efforts of absolutely all states,” the diplomat emphasised.
