Marine Corps Base Hawaii Barracks Project Crosses Halfway Mark

A rendering shows a five-story brick and concrete barracks with a central courtyard, lawns, a parking lot and people walking along the sidewalk.

Construction of two new barracks at Marine Corps Base Hawaii has passed the halfway mark, with structural work complete and crews installing building systems and finishing the interior.

The Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Hawaii’s $174.6 million project was about 53% complete as of Oct. 1. The two connected, five-story buildings will provide 190 rooms for up to 380 military personnel, replacing quarters that have reached the end of their usable life.

“These new quarters are an investment in our Marines and their readiness,” said Navy Capt. Andrew Hunt, NAVFAC Hawaii executive officer. “Providing modern, comfortable places to live helps Marines rest, recharge and stay focused on their mission. We’re proud to work alongside our installation and construction partners to deliver these facilities.”

Dave Robbins, NAVFAC Hawaii construction manager at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, said the field workforce is central to the project.

Crews have installed windows and railings throughout both buildings. Installation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems has progressed through the first three floors. A mockup room helps the team evaluate finishes, coordinate building systems and establish workmanship standards. The team has also completed more than 170,000 work hours without lost time due to injury.

The barracks will include elevators, duty offices, laundry rooms, vending areas and multipurpose spaces with kitchens and restrooms. Additional amenities include gear wash and drying areas, bicycle storage and recreational pavilions.

The project also includes roadway and parking improvements, sidewalks, landscaping, supporting utilities, a central plant and an emergency generator.

The project is scheduled for completion in June 2029.
