Regulators open follow-up recall query into VW ID.4 door issue
The top U.S. auto safety regulator has opened a recall query into Volkswagen’s electric ID.4 units this week, after complaints of vehicle doors opening unexpectedly when the vehicle is driving.
On Monday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced it had opened a recall query into 51,500 Volkswagen ID.4 units, after the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) reported receiving 12 complaints alleging that the vehicles’ doors had opened while in motion. The recall applies to ID.4 vehicles built between 2021 and 2023, and the reported incidents already had fixes for a previous door recall performed on the vehicles. The NHTSA says that no injuries or fatalities have been connected to the issue.
The notice says that doors may open unexpectedly when the vehicle is subject to high lateral forces at speeds below 9mph/15kmh, causing the door to deploy an “open command” to the handle.

“Some consumers report the vehicle’s door intermittently opens while driving with no reasonable detectability,” writes the ODI in the opening resume for the query. “Consumers also report the vehicle door handles will not allow occupants to enter or exit the vehicle. Vehicle doors opening while driving have a high risk of occupant ejection or excessive intrusion in a side impact collision.”
The recall query follows a similar recall launched in April 2023, in which ID.4 units with the 2023 model year were also recalled due to a lack of water ingress protection, causing doors to malfunction and open.
Volkswagen also recalled around 24,000 Volkswagen ID.4 units in December, after they were found to pose a heightened fire risk and required the installation of an extra fabric flame retardant. Last February, the ID.4 was also recalled due to an issue causing the vehicle to stall, though it was able to be fixed with the deployment of a software update.
