Musk responds to UAW labor charges following call with Trump
Elon Musk has responded to news that the United Automotive Workers (UAW) union opened federal labor charges against him and presidential candidate Donald Trump, following an interview between the two this week.
Musk and Trump spoke in an X Spaces call on Monday evening, with the conversation covering a number of topics such as labor, global politics, electric vehicles (EVs), and Trump’s 2024 campaign, among others still. On Tuesday, the UAW announced that it filed federal labor charges against Trump and Musk, after the presidential candidate mentioned the idea of firing striking workers during the call—which would be in violation of federal labor laws.
“I mean, I look at what you do,” Trump said during the call. “You walk in, you say, ‘You want to quit?’ They go on strike, I won’t mention the name of the company, but they go on strike, and you say, ‘That’s OK, you’re all gone. You’re all gone. So, every one of you is gone.’”
Under the National Labor Relations Act, workers can’t be fired for going on strike, as highlighted in the Tuesday filing.
In response to the news, Musk alluded to recent investigations into UAW President Shawn Fain, noting that the previous presidents of the union were actually found guilty of bribery and corruption.
The last two UAW presidents went to prison for bribery & corruption and, based on recent news, it looks like this guy will join them!

Fain is currently being investigated by an independent monitor after the union’s secretary-treasurer claimed that he had used retaliation and intimidation tactics when certain expenditures weren’t approved for his office. Musk and Fain have also had a contentious history online over the past few years, with the two most recently arguing over Musk’s alleged $45 million a month donations to a Super PAC supporting Trump, which Musk has denied.
“When we say Donald Trump is a scab, this is what we mean. When we say Trump stands against everything our union stands for, this is what we mean,” Fain said in the Tuesday press release. “Donald Trump will always side against workers standing up for themselves, and he will always side with billionaires like Elon Musk, who is contributing $45 million a month to a Super PAC to get him elected. Both Trump and Musk want working class people to sit down and shut up, and they laugh about it openly. It’s disgusting, illegal, and totally predictable from these two clowns.”
Following the call, Musk also posted on X that he was “happy to host Kamala on an X Spaces too,” despite having endorsed Trump in the 2024 election a few weeks ago. He has also had a contentious relationship with U.S. President Joe Biden over the last few years, with the Tesla CEO recently saying that he and his administration were “utterly controlled” by the UAW.
Musk has been traditionally opposed to unions, and on many occasions has highlited past scandals involving the UAW. In 2021, he also invited the union to hold a vote at Tesla’s Fremont factory in 2022, though a vote was never held.
Other highlights from the Monday conversation between Musk and Trump include a roughly hour-long delay at the beginning, due to what Musk explained was a DDoS attack on X. Musk also attempted to encourage Trump and his voters to stop their attacks on EVs, while the presidential candidate encouraged Musk’s followers to vote Republican in November.
