Corona protests: Current status report - Germany
Corona protests: Current status report
The protests against the corona policy are expanding. According to an estimate, around 400,000 people demonstrated across Germany on January 3rd. In the six federal states and regions for which total police figures are available alone, 397 demonstrations with over 100,000 participants were registered that day. The largest protests took place in Nuremberg, Friedrichshafen and again in Rostock.
Demonstrations at the turn of the year
By far the largest protest march of the past few days took place on New Year’s Day in Düsseldorf. According to the police , 6,500 people walked peacefully through the city center. A police spokesman denied any other reports, according to which more than 10,000 people had participated . In the past weeks between 2,000 and 4,000 citizens had demonstrated in Düsseldorf.
Also on New Year’s Day, around 1,600 people marched peacefully through the inner city of the 20,000-inhabitant town of Überlingen on Lake Constance. Your concern summed up the local press as follows: “. Children and adolescents protect occur for a vibrant democracy and a free Impfentscheidung” In Regensburg, where 1,000 people, and according to the police at the same time 12 counter-demonstrators were on the road, it said on banners: “Away with the compulsory vaccination” and “Our freedom is inviolable”, as a video shows . There was also a demonstration in the north on New Year’s Day, for example in Flensburg .
On Sunday, January 2nd, according to the police, 5,500 people protested peacefully in Saarbrücken under the motto: “We say no to the compulsory vaccination. We don’t want a two-tier society. ”The organizers spoke of more than 7,000 participants. The previous week it was 3,000.
The Monday demos on January 3rd
On the first Monday of the new year, well over a hundred thousand people took to the streets in Germany, including in Rostock , Nuremberg (4,000 participants each), Friedrichshafen (3,000), Magdeburg (2,500), Gera , Schwerin , Halle , Wittenberg , Bamberg (2,000 each) ), Neubrandenburg (1,800), Dresden , Koblenz , Gummersbach (1,500 each), Altenburg, Saalfeld, Bautzen, Cottbus, Fulda, Lübeck and Braunschweig (1,000 each).
Information on the number of participants is partly controversial. The police in Gera reported 2,000 people, while the MDR reported that eyewitnesses “estimated the amount to be about double that”.
The total number of demonstrators in Germany on January 3rd can only be estimated. Police data exist for Baden-Württemberg (50,000 protesters at 170 demos), Middle Franconia (8,000 at 15 demos), Rhineland-Palatinate (9,000 at 84 demos), Thuringia (16,000 at 60 demos), Saxony-Anhalt (18,000 at 48 demos ) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (12,000 at 20 demos). That is a total of 113,000 protesters at 397 demonstrations in federal states and regions in which a total of 23 million people live. If you apply this quota to the total population in Germany, the result is a hypothetical value of around 400,000 demonstrators.
The situation in Rostock
According to official figures, the largest corona protests in all of Germany took place in the Hanseatic city of Rostock on the previous two Mondays. Thousands of people were also on the move on January 3rd. According to the Rostock police, around 4,000 people came together, “the vast majority of them from the bourgeois spectrum,” as the police report noted . 450 police officers accompanied the demonstration. Multipolar was on site and then spoke to the original applicant, Jens Kaufmann. According to him, various streamers who filmed the elevator gave a rough projection of over 20,000 participants. A five-minute video recording shows the dimension.

The demonstration began with a delay because there were differences of opinion between the original registrant and the police about the meeting area, and a representative of the assembly authority, i.e. the municipal public order office, could not be reached, according to Kaufmann. But soon afterwards the crowd started moving and the planned route could be adhered to.
Multipolar spoke to some demonstrators. All respondents rated the mood as positive and peaceful. Only the heavy police presence caused some discomfort. When asked about personal motives for participating in the demonstration, the announced compulsory vaccination and the resulting fears of existence were repeatedly mentioned. The protection of one’s own children and grandchildren also played a major role, as did solidarity with those people who are affected by the measures and the steadily increasing pressure. After initial skepticism, many respondents seemed happy to be able to speak openly and directly about the current situation.
When does the round table come?
The demonstrators in Rostock have been calling on Mayor Klaus Ruhe Madsen at their rallies since February 2021 to set up a weekly public questionnaire about the Corona measures. When asked about this demand, Kaufmann said on January 3rd: “A dialogue should gradually take place. It cannot be the goal that in four weeks we are walking in circles with 100,000 people. ”It is important“ that people come back into dialogue so that understanding for one another arises again – ideally at round tables with politicians, media representatives and the Citizens. “
Lord Mayor Madsen has so far never made direct contact with the demonstrators, although he recently campaigned for mutual understanding in an NDR interview and expressed the wish to “connect instead of drifting apart”. “There was no reaction – and that from a mayor who describes himself as being close to the people. It’s a disaster for this city, ”said Kaufmann. “But Rostock has set a sensational example for this today. I am so proud of this city. To set such an example from Rostock for the third time in a row and to hold the largest Monday demo nationwide and possibly Europe-wide, that cannot be put into words. “
Again a big demo in the small town of Wolgast
On December 29th, 2,000 citizens demonstrated in the West Pomeranian town of Wolgast, near the island of Usedom, with a population of 12,000 . Here, too, different information is circulating. A reporter for the local newspaper Nordkurier estimated the number of participants at 3,000 , the organizers themselves assume 4,000 people. In a video recordingThe elevator shows a positive, non-aggressive mood. The demonstrators marched through the city with whistles and drums and carried signs and banners that read, among other things: “End the fake pandemic”, “We are the red line” and “No compulsory corona vaccination”. In addition, calls could be heard that are common at many demonstrations against the Corona measures, such as: “On the streets – resistance”, “Join us” and “We are the people”.
