Degenerate Art

I was watching The Rachel Maddow Show this evening when I first heard the sad news that Andres Serrano’s infamous “Piss Christ” had been vandalized in France.

The “Collection Lambert” art museum in Avignon was displaying “Piss Christ” (a photograph of a crucifix submerged in urine) and “The Church” (the torso of a nun with her hands in her lap) in their “I Believe In Miracles” exhibit when three men entered the building with spray paint and chisels.

As the guard detained two of the vandals, a third man attacked the “Piss Christ” with a hammer. Reports indicate that he also damaged “The Church” before he was ejected from the building.

On Saturday, a mob of 800 people forced the museum to close. Several protesters have called and threatened to kill the museum staff if they reopen the museum and display this blasphemous garbage again in Avignon. 

The museum is set to reopen this morning and will display what is left of “Piss Christ” so the public “can appreciate for themselves the violence of the acts.” It should be interesting to see if the enraged locals make good on their threats.
