North Carolina State Senator Jim Forrester Has Died
As I posted earlier today, State Senator Jim Forrester, a Republican from Stanley, was hospitalized this morning due to cranial bleeding. He ultimately passed away this afternoon.
A staunch conservative on social issues, Forrester was no stranger to controversy. He was a key player in getting support to put the constitutional amendment on the ballot in next year’s primary to ban homosexual marriage in North Carolina. He received quite a bit of flak as well for referring to Asheville as a “cesspool of sin” for its large homosexual population. Despite his straight forwardness on those issues he cared deeply about, his fellow legislators on both sides of the aisle had good things to say about him today.
Sen. Martin Nesbitt, who represents Buncombe County and Asheville, and Sen. Bill Purcell are both Democrats who also clashed with Forrester on policy issues at times. But they issued a joint statement Monday that praised Forrester for always working hard for the citizens of his district.
“Although we come from different political parties and often had differing opinions, we hold great respect for Jim and called him a friend,” they said in the statement. “We worked with him closely on the Health and Human Services Committee over the years and as a doctor he brought a necessary level of expertise to Senate deliberations on health care matters.”
