DeMint Term Limits Amendment Fails in Senate
Not really much of a surprise, but Senate Amendment 1488 that Senator Jim DeMint attached to the STOCK Act legislation went down in flames. Only 24 Senators voted in favor of it, all Republicans, with the exception of Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia.
I’ve always been a little on the fence when it comes to term limits, myself. On the one hand, I agree with supporters that it may be necessary medicine to take some of the corruption out of politics. The longer a member of Congress is in Washington, the more entrenched they become with the special interests and the more power they gain with their seniority. We always hear the phrase “powerful politician,” but in my view, there should be no such thing. The people are supposed to have the power.
On the other hand, the Founders gave us term limits when you really think about it. They’re every two years on Election Day. That is when the people have the power to limit the incumbent to another term. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really happen as often as it should. There is such a partisan divide in this country that with the gerrymandered districts in pretty much every state the majority are usually reluctant to throw out their lousy representative because “he’s at least better than putting in that guy from the other party.” In heavily partisan districts primary elections are really the only way to get rid of a parasitic incumbent and barring a very visible scandal, primary challenges have even less of a success rate than the general election. And quite frankly, all this aside, if people want to vote in crooked asshats like Barney Frank for 30 years then does the government really have the right to take that freedom from them?
Having said all that, if I were a member of Congress and faced with this vote I would probably lean in favor of it because overall I think the effects of limiting the amount of time a member of Congress can serve would be a net positive. In this particular instance, though, I may have voted against it because DeMint broke a rule which is one of my pet peeves. He attached this amendment to unrelated legislation, something I’ve been railing about for some time. He should reintroduce this as its own bill and have full debate on it.
For the record, Senators DeMint (R) and Graham (R) voted in favor of the amendment. Senators Burr (R) and Hagan (D) voted against it.
