Showdown Between Texas and the Obama Administration

Did you know that Texas is the only state in the country that has a clause in their state constitution that says that they have the right to secede from the union?  I wonder what would happen if they decided to choose to exercise that clause and declare themselves to be a free and sovereign country of their own?

I don’t think it will come to that, but they are on the verge of starting a political war that just may make some Texans start to think about seceding.

Thomas Suehs, Commissioner of Texas Health and Human Services signed a new state regulation that will formally prohibit all abortion providers including Planned Parenthood, from participating in the state’s Women’s Health Program.  The new regulation was passed by Texas lawmakers and endorsed by Greg Abbott, Texas Attorney General.

The Obama administration does not like to be challenged or countermanded by anyone or any state.  In typical federal fashion, they have threatened to revoke Texas’s federal funding of the state’s Medicaid program.  Living up to one of the state’s unofficial mottos of ‘Don’t mess with Texas,’ the Lone Star state refused to bow down to the fed’s threat and if Texas continues to stand its ground, the Women’s Health Program will most likely be discontinued on March 14 when the new regulations take effect.

Allison Castle, spokeswoman for Gov Rick Perry, said,

“The Obama administration is trying to force Texas to violate our own state laws or they will end a program that provides preventative health care to more than 100,000 Texas women.  This boils down to the rule of law — which the state of Texas respects and the Obama administration does not.”

Not surprisingly, Planned Parenthood is up in arms over the ban as they stand to lose millions of dollars that they would have made by murdering unborn children.  Peter J Durkin, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast said,

“No one’s politics should interfere with a woman’s access to health care. It is shameful that Governor Perry and Commissioner Suehs continue to politicize lifesaving breast cancer screenings and birth control access for low-income women.”

We can only hope and pray that Texas will stand their ground against the Obama administration and that the lives of thousands of innocent children will be saved.  And if the feds try to get too overbearing with Texas, they need to consider the amount of oil, beef and farming that occurs in Texas and what would happen to all of that if they did secede.
