Liberal Catholics Compare Vatican II’s “People of God” to Racial Segregation

The National Catholic Reporter’s blogger is again attacking Vatican II and the primacy of conscience.

Yesterday the U.S. Bishops defended the Second Vatican Council’s teachings on religious freedom and the laity, declaring that people should free to seek and live basic religious truths apart from government coercion, and that the “Church” is not merely the hierarchy but is every Christian believer following his Lord in daily life, including in contributing to his community through business. Therefore, President Obama’s mandates that all Americans support the sexual revolution in healthcare are a violation of the religious liberty of individuals, as well as religious of non-profits. This principle necessarily flows from the Council’s teaching that the Church’s head, Christ, lives out His life and rule within His entire Body, the People of God, in all walks and circumstances of life and in all their consciences.

But according to the “Catholic Lite Brigade,” this argument is akin to defending racial segregation. “Racist!” is now the battle cry for liberal Catholics to defend their anti-freedom and anti-life president.

Everything liberal Catholics claim to believe (especially when they have defended their own dissenting ranks) about primacy of conscience and the dignity of the laity as full Christian believers, they now completely toss overboard in blind defense of radically pro-abortion and pro-Planned Parenthood coercion coming from their own political party. No person has any civil right to a conscience according to pundits such as the National Catholic Reporter’s Michael Sean Winters, unless that Catholic is (a) an Obama-donating social service organization, or (b) a dissenter from Humanae Vitae.

Liberal Catholics must logically believe that Ted Kennedy, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and Bill Clinton are all defenders of racial segregation because they likewise encoded into federal law, many many times, the principle that health mandates shall not violate “religious or moral” conscience. But, of course, they would never make that comparison, because they are partisans. Liberal Catholics only say you’re a racist if you are a pro-life Bishop defending religious freedom (and if you are a pro-life lay person, get ready for a Hitler analogy!).

Apparently Godwin’s Law does not apply to liberal Catholics–they must have lobbied for an “exemption.”
