Pro-life Protestors Arrested While Protesting on Public Sidewalks

Exactly to whom do sidewalks belong?

In most cities, the sidewalks are included in the property owners deed, but in reality, they belong to the city or county.  It is considered part of the public access or easement that runs across the property of the landowner.  If you think you own the sidewalk in front of your house, just try blocking it to keep anyone else from using it and see what happens.

However the public access to sidewalks is not so public if you are a pro-life demonstrator.

Kristina Garza and Brianna Baxter were conducting a peaceful pro-life protest on behalf of Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, which is a pro-life activist organization.  They chose to protest on the sidewalk in front of Murrah High School in Jackson, Mississippi when they were arrested.

The two young ladies were detained by the police and held in jail overnight.  The following morning, they were released from jail and allowed to return home.

Jeff White, founder of Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust said in response to the arrest,

“Through the years, our young people have been arrested over 50 times in front of public schools or on public school [property], and we have won every single case.  Sometimes we just have to go back and win back the public sidewalk, win back our right to free speech.

“Oh, we’re absolutely going to fight it.  Judging from past situations, we have found very often these cities stiffen their neck and become proud and won’t drop the charges.”

Again I have to wonder if the girls would have been arrested if they were demonstrating for abortion or gay rights?  It seems that the only people being arrested for protesting these days are those whose causes are conservative and Christian.  Everyone else has the right to protest except those that want to save our nation and the morality of the people.
