Has the Left Ever Seen an Abortion It Didn’t Like?
This piece, from The Atlantic, describes a study on the geographical breakdown of abortion. One of the findings mentioned is that in recent decades abortion rates have begun to track along Red State/Blue State lines. I don’t have the know-how or the time to verify the author’s interpretations of and conclusions drawn from the many studies he cites. But I can look at pictures, so I looked at this map from the article, that shows the number of abortions per 1,000 women:
And then I looked at this map from the 2008 presidential election:
I don’t know…I suppose the pattern holds, somewhat. But what struck me most about the article was its attitude with respect to the lower abortion rates in some areas of the country.
Reading the article, one quickly gets a sense of the sympathies of the author. By the end, it’s pretty clear where he stands, as he laments the relatively low number of abortions in many Red States, citing it as clear evidence of restrictions on the reproductive rights of women.
Pro-abortion folks always cry foul when they are called “pro-abortion.” They claim they are pro-choice, pro-woman, pro-whatever, but not pro-abortion. They profess to find abortion as abhorrent as the most passionate pro-lifer. The only difference is that their enlightened minds are able to recognize how “complex” the issue is, and therefore they must protect a woman’s right to make this difficult choice. We all remember when Bill Clinton proclaimed his ardent desire that abortion be “safe, legal, and rare.”
It was a lie then, and it’s a lie now. A great many who claim to be “pro-choice” are nothing of the sort. Certainly the most powerful and vocal of the supporters of legal abortion are just that – pro-abortion, not pro-choice. If they were truly pro-choice, we would hear them screaming bloody murder over China’s one-child policy and the forced abortions it entails. If they were truly “pro-woman,” we would hear them condemning the “gendercide” that is becoming more prevelant, even in our country. If they really wanted abortion to be safe, legal, and rare, they would applaud Red States like Idaho, Kentucky, and Mississippi, where apparently the Clintonian vision is in fact a reality.
But they don’t. Instead they see any decrease in the number of abortions, or the number of abortionists, or the number of abortion clinics as a bad thing. And that is very telling indeed.
