To Ban Firearms is Yielding to Tyranny

Allow me to begin with a point of personal privilege.  In keeping with the spirit of the 2^nd Amendment, I believe that whatever a government has within its arsenal, the private citizen has a right to keep within their arsenal.  Yes, this means that if a government has a right to possess a cruise missile, then I believe that a private citizen has the right to possess one, as well.  You can’t beat back a tyrannical government in the 21^st century with a pellet gun.  Radical?  Perhaps.

To the question of “leadership”: Leadership in a representative, constitutional republic demands one to wear the mantle of servitude.  Thus, if the citizens are solidly in favor of unfettered access to assault weapons, then it’s the role of the servant leader to find the means of providing the wishes of the electorate and not defy them.  Edicts and dictates – especially outside the constraints of the Constitution – aren’t the product of leadership but foolishness.

However, not unlike an experienced lawyer with a headstrong client, a political leader can certainly attempt to persuade the electorate to adopt a position under the banner of wisdom, or humanity, etc.  And like a lawyer refusing to practice in the manner the client prefers can result in a firing, a political leader not advocating and working for a position the electorate prefers can result in their defeat at the ballot box.

Mr. Romney is the former governor of Massachusetts.  He aspires to be the President of the United States.  Liberal Massachusetts is out of the American mainstream, not Mr. Romney’s current position on gun control.  My advice to Mr. Romney is to be unyielding on 2^nd Amendment matters and reject all calls from the Left to expand bans on any firearms – especially in the aftermath of tragic events like the Colorado theater massacre.
