The following appeared recently in the Lorain Journal concerning the Lorain County Joint Police District Levy.

”Fewer Lorain County Sheriff’s Office deputies on road patrol has increased response times and put more than 56,000 township residents at risk, advocates for the Lorain County Joint Police District Levy said.

A 911 call from a township resident played at a recent meeting about the levy demonstrated the point. The frantic caller was hiding in a closet because someone broke into their home. Even with lights and sirens blaring, it took a deputy 20 minutes to reach the victim.

“That person was petrified,” said Marsha Funk, head of the Lorain County Township Association Safety Committee and levy chairwoman.”

This 1.25 mill levy will provide patrol protection for the residents of 16 townships. The trustees passed a resolution to create this district that was officially formed in April. Amherst, Brighton, Brownhelm, Camden, Carlisle, Eaton, Elyria, Grafton, Henrietta, Huntington, New Russia, Penfield, Pittsfield, Rochester, Sheffield and Wellington townships will be part of the district. Columbia and LaGrange township opted out of the district.

While it sounds like a good thing, one has to remember that the County Commissioners are responsible to provide funds for the various county departments, including the Sheriff and his staff. The current Commissioners are about to receive about $4 million in Casino windfall monies. Why would I approve another tax increase for myself to fix a problem that allows the Commissioners to waste the casino funds on their worthless investments and buses to nowhere?

Henrietta Township is holding a meeting on 10/17 for residents to get more information at the Township Hall on Vermilion Road.

If you don’t think that you are over taxed and under represented; by all mean, vote yourself another tax hike!
