Narcotics detectives in Salt Lake City on Wednesday used a battering ram to knock down a door and execute a search warrant on the wrong house, frightening the home’s 76-year-old resident.

“This was a mistake,” Police Chief Chris Burbank said Friday. “It should not have happened.”

At least in this case the cops didn’t shoot the victim or a dog or something in the process.

Probably just an oversight.

Not shooting anybody or their dog, I mean.

Look: These “mistakes” happen way too frequently. Actually, that they happen at all is “too frequently.”

These no-know SWAT raids are almost exclusively aimed at drugs in one way or another. And one of the reasons that cops love the War on Some Drugs is that the law gives them a tailor-made incentive – they get to keep the spoils they discover in these raids. Thus, this sort of thuggery becomes a significant income stream for the cop shops of the police state.

The quickest way to cut down on them – and the clear and present danger they pose to the public – is to end the War on Some Drugs.

And stop selling the accoutrements of war to civilian police departments.
