Bob Corker Wins Tennessee Senate Race

Bob Corker is projected to win his re-election bid over disavowed Democrat Mark Clayton according to Fox News, ABC, and NBC with just a fraction of the polling stations reporting. Corker appears to be winning in a landslide – a result less than surprising to anyone following this race. Controversial statements made by his opponents that were characterized as “anti-gay” led to Clayton being all but ignored by the DNC.

For what its worth, I’m not sure that it would have mattered either way. Corker’s among the most “moderate” Republicans in the Senate and the only threat to his seat would have (and didn’t) come in the primary.

I’m admittedly, a reluctant Corker supporter. I think he has everything one needs to become a real player in Washington with his second term. He’s takes a pragmatic approach to governance that would be more than valuable to the next president – especially if that president is Governor Mitt Romney. If a “bipartisan agenda” is truly going to be on the table for 2013, Corker will be a pivotal figure.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Republican U.S. Sen. Bob Corker has won a second six-year term.

The former Chattanooga mayor easily defeated Democrat Mark Clayton, a part-time floor installer who was disavowed by the state party after the primary for his anti-gay views.

In early returns, Corker had Corker had 29,666 votes, or 78 percent, compared with Clayton’s 6,653 votes, or 16 percent. Seven other candidates split the rest of the vote.

This year’s election was a far cry from Corker’s first successful bid for the Senate in 2006, when he defeated Democrat Harold Ford Jr. by fewer than 3 percentage points in what was one of the country’s most closely-fought elections.
