Spending Cuts-Rhetoric or Common Sense?‏

This morning, House Speaker John Boehner said that any increase in the debt limit would have to be matched by further spending cuts.  This would seem to make sense in the real world, where American families struggle to live within tight budgets or risk financial ruin.  In the world of Washington politics, it is heresy for anyone to suggest a tightening of the financial belt.

In typical corrupt media fashion, Obama spokesman Jay Carney was asked a question that was set up so as to make a casual observer believe that Republicans were responsible for America’s credit downgrade.

With regards to Speaker Boehner’s statement with regards to matching a debt increase with corresponding spending cuts, the questioner continued with, “That’s the same kind of rhetoric that we heard in 2011.  Are you concerned that it’s being used as leverage again in a way that could be damaging to the United States?”

As a nation, we are $16 trillion dollars in debt; unfunded liabilities push that number closer to $100 trillion dollars.  The economy’s anemic growth fails to keep up with population growth, thereby keeping unemployment painfully high.  But somehow, we’re supposed to believe that Speaker Boehner’s “rhetoric” with regards to balancing spending with cuts is the problem.

Even worse, Carney responds by saying, “Asking that a political price be paid in order for Congress to do its job to ensure that the United States of America pays its bills and does not default for the first time in history is deeply irresponsible.”  He goes on to say that “The President absolutely expects Congress to do its job”, insisting that one of their jobs is to make sure the government pays its bills.

President Obama’s been running trillion-dollar deficits; his senate has failed to pass a budget in almost 4 years; Obama’s own budgets have failed to garner a “yes” vote from DEMOCRATS.  By all accounts, the Obama fiscal policy has been criminally negligent but Speaker Boehner asking for spending cuts is “irresponsible?”

America’s credit was downgraded-not because of “rhetoric” suggesting spending cuts that would offset an increase in the debt ceiling-but because of the Obama administration’s failure to appear serious about getting its financials in order.  The Obama administration was perceived as not being serious about getting America’s debt under control, and thus the reason for the credit downgrade.

Thomas Jefferson thought it wrong to saddle posterity with debt that should rightly be paid off within a generation.  The current administration refuses to deal with the out-of-control spending, instead insisting on raising the debt limit yet again.  Apparently President Obama’s conveniently forgotten what he thought about such things during his predecessor’s tenure-debt was “unpatriotic” and raising the debt ceiling was a “failure of leadership.”  Unfortunately, there are four more years of failed leadership awaiting us if Americans don’t wake up.
