What You Need To Know: Universal Background Check

You will hear talk today about passing a universal background check as part of new gun laws and regulations. Odds are the concept will escape further examination. Many will immediately think that it sounds like a good idea. It is a trick, a ploy, a chess move and a sinister plot moving us one step closer to disarmament.

Here’s what you need to know.

Current law requires that anyone who regularly sells firearms to apply for and obtain a Federal Firearms License. Each firearm sold by a licensed dealer must be logged into inventory and accounted for. Each dealer must assure the ATFE that all firearms are safe and secure at all times.

Anyone who purchases a firearm from a licensed dealer must go through a federal background check. All sales must be logged out of inventory. On a regular basis the ATFE audits the records of all dealers for compliance. License revocations regularly occur when proper records of inventory and background checks are found to be missing or in error.

The “Universal Background Check” does nothing to the system currently in place for licensed dealers. However, it does impose a requirement on individuals who transfer firearms in private transactions.

For example, no grandfather could buy his grandson a youth model shotgun for Christmas anymore without fully completing federal forms for the transfer, running a background check and, if the grandson was under the age of 18, would prevent the grandfather from giving his grandson a shotgun, or a .22 rifle. And if the grandfather did purchase a youth model shotgun for his grandson it would make him a criminal for engaging in a staw purchase!

It is nothing more or less than forcing us one step closer to gun registration.
