FBI Website Contradicts Breaking CNN Report About Arrest Made In Boston Marathon Bombing Case

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

By Susan Duclos

[Update] Guess the last update wasn’t the final one after all. ABC News Boston says the anonymous source for the AP story, stands behind his/her information, despite the denials from the FBI and Justice department saying there has been no arrest.

[Update] This should be the final update and headline change, then again, you never know.

FBI Website: No Arrest Made In Bombing Investigation:

FBI Boston

April 17, 2013

  • Special Agent Greg Comcowich
    (617) 223-6110

Contrary to widespread reporting, no arrest has been made
in connection with the Boston Marathon attack. Over the past day and a
half, there have been a number of press reports based on information
from unofficial sources that has been inaccurate. Since these stories
often have unintended consequences, we ask the media, particularly at
this early stage of the investigation, to exercise caution and attempt
to verify information through appropriate official channels before
reporting.

1-800-CALL-FBI | Updates on Investigation

[Update] Minutes after the previous two updates, showing two different headlines as CNN walked back their reports, same URL, CNN again changes the headline to “Source: ‘Significant progress,’ but no arrest in bombing”

[Update] 9 minutes after last update, CNN changes headline to “Confusion over arrest reports in Boston bombing”

It is possible that the same source was used by CNN and AP (linked below), although the AP went a step further in saying, via their Twitter feed that the suspect was expected in federal court:

[Update] CNN headline remains “Authorities arrest suspect in Boston bombings, source says”(2:43 pm ET)

[Update] There are now conflicting reports on whether an arrest has been made or not. CNN’s website still headlines with arrest being made, others, via Twitter and other sources claim no arrest. Boston Globe and AP earlier reported there was an arrest.

Further updates will be on top……

[Update] Via CNN:

[Updated at 2:33 p.m. ET] There is conflicting information as to whether someone has been arrested in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings.

A federal law enforcement source told CNN’s Fran Townsend that
someone was arrested. But two senior administration officials and
another federal official then told Townsend that there had been a
misunderstanding among officials and that no one has been arrested.

Original post below

CNN is reporting there has been an arrest made for the Boston Marathon bombings which killed three people and wounded up to 170 more.

An arrest has been made in connection with Monday’s Boston Marathon
bombings, sources tell CNN’s John King and CNN contributor Fran
Townsend. King’s source is with Boston law enforcement, he said;
Townsend’s source is with federal law enforcement.

Earlier reports said the arrest was imminent.

[Updates below]

An earlier report from CBS News:

Investigators made a “clear identification” of a suspect in the
bombings with surveillance video, according to CNN, which is reporting
that a suspect has been arrested.

Correspondent John King, a Boston native, said authorities have a
clear video image of a “dark-skinned male” placing a bag at the second
bomb site outside of the Forum restaurant on Boylston Street and then
leaving the area before that explosion.

WTVR:

The breakthrough came from an analysis of video from a Lord and
Taylor department store near the site of the second blast, and video
from a Boston TV station helped as well, an official told CNN’s John
King.

Authorities have a clear image of someone placing the kind of package
authorities are looking for, including clear identification of the
possible suspect’s face, the source told King

[Update] According to the Boston Globe, the AP also reported the arrest:

The Associated Press reported this afternoon that an arrest had been
made in the bombing case, citing a law enforcement source. The suspect
was to be brought to federal court, the news service reported.

[Update] Boston police have announced a public briefing Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Developing and will update as more news comes out about who the bomber is……..

(Headline changed to reflect the conflicting reports on arrest)
