Top Two Open Primary Elections; Power to the People!

Have you ever gone to vote in an Ohio primary election and wished that you could vote for candidates not listed on your party affiliated ballot? I certainly have. Being a registered Dem also limits my choice in candidates during a primary election; even though my tax dollars pay for the poll workers, ballots and everything associated with the elections.
Ohio legislators, the majority of which are from the major two parties, have actually designed the current election laws to all but forbid voters and candidates who are not Republicrats from participating  as candidates or voters. Have you ever seen independent candidates in a pre-primary debate with the Republicrats? No.
In the general election for Ohio’s US Senate seat, Mandel and Brown escaped face to face meet ups with Scott Rupert by claiming that Rupert’s campaign had not raised enough money to qualify for an invitation to debate and the media managed to leave his name out of every article about the race. When asked why, they stated the same reason; not enough cash in the coffer. The Republicrats and the media virtually prevented you, the voter, from hearing or seeing any other candidates, but Mandel and Brown were permitted to take, and use, millions of dollars in “out of state” PAC donations to buy their win.
I may be a political novice, but even I see collusion on the part of the Republicrats and the media to keep Ohio’s voters from learning the truth about all the candidates we might have to choose from. My copy of the Constitution does not say that only those with a certain dollar amount in their campaign fund can run for, or be elected to, a local, state or federal office.
If you are fed up with, tired of, and disillusioned by our current legislators why not join the growing number of independent/non-affiliated voters in Ohio. Make primary elections about the candidates; not the political parties. Contact the Secretary of State, your Columbus representatives and the Constitutional Modernization Commission and demand they put the question to the voters on the 2014 primary ballot; Top Two Open Primaries in Ohio… YES or NO.
BRINGING TOP TWO OPEN PRIMARIES TO OHIO
WHY BRING A TOP
TWO OPEN PRIMARY SYSTEM TO OHIO?

Top Two Open Primaries would give all Ohio’s
voters the right to participate in the critical first round of voting,
regardless of their party preference or non preference.  This is the round
of voting that determines what candidates will be on the ballot in the general
election and is currently closed to independent voters.  Top Two Open
Primaries would allow all registered voters in Ohio, regardless of party
preference or lack thereof,  to choose from all the candidates, regardless
of candidate party preference or non preference.

Under the Top Two Open Primary System, all Ohio
voters would use the same ballot in the primary
, allowing them to choose from
all the candidates, regardless of either voter or candidate party preference.
The top two vote getters would go on to the general election.

WHO PAYS FOR THE
CURRENT PRIMARY SYSTEM?

You, the Ohio taxpayer, pay.  Under the
current primary system, Ohio voters are closed from voting in the primary
except on issues if they choose not to be affiliated with any particular
political party.  Regardless of whether you are a member of a political party
or not, you are still required to pay taxes to support private party primaries.

WOULD TOP TWO
OPEN PRIMARIES END POLITICAL PARTIES?

No. Under the
First Amendment, Americans have the right to freely associate, including to
form political parties or, instead, to be independent voters who vote for the
best candidate regardless of party.  The Top Two System would not
interfere with the right of private political parties, at their own expense, to
endorse candidates participating in the primary election.  It would simply
ensure that the primary election conducted at taxpayer expense would (1) be
open to all registered voters in Ohio; and (2) would allow voters to choose
from all candidates, regardless of party preference.

HOW CAN YOU VOLUNTEER OR GET MORE INFORMATION?

Independent Ohio is
a grassroots organization that is part of a national network of independent
voters. We are building a movement and support structural political reforms
that can open up the political process to independents and reduce partisanship
in government. Independent Ohio is affiliated with IndependentVoting.org, a
national strategy and organizing center for the independent movement.
Independent Ohio is focused on empowering voters by building a collective
voice and reforming Ohio’s political process to give a stronger voice to
independent voters.
