America Farewell?

I’m reading the 1970 book CHINA FAREWELL by Baptist missionary L. Emma Brodbeck who served three decades of living and working in areas of West China. At the close of the year 1949 the Reds arrived and shortly “Hate-America” slogans were being taught to the children and textbooks were destroyed to eliminate any remembrance of their Christian leader, Generalissimo, Chiang Kai-shek who America abandoned in his time of need. He along with high officers and important government officials evacuated Nanking, the capital, and escaped to Taiwan after the bulk of his Nationalist Army had been disbanded. In September, Communists had proclaimed rule over all of China and established the Chinese People’s Republic, with Mao Tse-Tung as chairman. This same hate-America theme was luridly illustrated later during the Korean War.

In June 2008, the President-to-be Barack Obama declared: “The danger from Iran is grave, it is real, and my goal will be to eliminate this threat.” Pundits failed to report more than 30 years ago, the U.S. foreign policy establishment helped to bring into power the Iranian regime it now deplores. Iran had been an ally ruled by a constitutional monarchy and war discussions would be unnecessary. Houchang Nahavandi, one of the Shah’s ministers and closest advisers, reveals in his book The Last Shah of Iran: “We now know that the idea of deposing the Shah was broached continually, from the mid-seventies on, in the National Security Council in Washington, by Henry Kissinger, whom the Shah thought of as a firm friend.” Kissinger virtually epitomized the American establishment before acting as Secretary of State under Republican Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, he had been chief foreign-affairs adviser to one-world government advocate Nelson Rockefeller, whom he called “the single most influential person in my life. “

ACCOMMODATION

The January 6, 2014 New American magazine’s Freedom Index indicates how our Congressmen and Senators vote on certain issues. It reports how during consideration of the defense appropriation bill (H.R. 2397), Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) offered an amendment to prohibit funds to “be used for United States military exercises which included any participation by the People’s Republic of China. On September 6, 2013 after this amendment was rejected, three Chinese warships arrived at Pearl Harbor to participate in a joint one-day search-and-rescue drill with the U.S. Navy guided-missile cruiser U.S.S. Lake Erie. The joint exercise was conducted on September 9, 2013. For the first time in U.S. history, Chinese People’s Liberation troops put boots on U.S. soil as they participated in a joint “Disaster Management Exchange” with the U.S. Army Pacific, the Hawaii Army National Guard, and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. The amendment to prohibit the use of funds for such ventures was intended to prevent the U.S. military from participating with them. The House rejected Stockman’s amendment on July 24, 2013 by a vote of 137 to 286 (Roll Call 404)

America is insolvent. We are deeply indebted to China so once again, America accommodates the communists. Soviet defector Anatoliy Golitsyn has been publicly warning the West against acceptance of this deadly illusion that Communism is dead. In July 2009 Obama went to Moscow to meet with Communist leaders. It does not take long for ignorance, indolence and waste to dissipate the fruits of wisdom, work and frugality Americans have known in the past. Grover Cleveland said on April 13, 1895: “This nation can promise the American people safety and protection only as long as its solvency is unsuspected, its honor unsullied and the soundness of its money unquestioned.” While our mystery president Barack Obama is deliberately decimating and demoralizing our military, Beijing is embarking on a huge, almost unprecedented military buildup.

In the 1963 book How the Far East Was Lost by Anthony Kubek – American policy and the creation of Communist China, 1941-1949. The book gives an account of American foreign policy toward China during the Roosevelt-Truman administrations, and is heavily documented by such materials as the private papers of former Ambassador to China, Patrick J. Hurley, and General Joseph Stilwell. The conclusions deal authoritatively with errors of the Roosevelt-Truman, administrations regarding the Communist conquest of China.

While this article is about China, it should be noted Kubek also named the communist sympathizers in the FDR administration and said, “Roosevelt, not Stalin, shaped the growth of modern Russia with his Land Lease program that encouraged Soviet expansion. The threat of Soviet statesmen have weight today primarily because President FDR extended to a badly beaten and disorganized Russia the Land-Lease help that transformed that nation in retreat into a conquering power, which was to move across the map of Europe in giant steps, not halting until it had drawn the new frontiers that now menace world peace.

The People’s Republic of China has been a self-proclaimed enemy of the United States, responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of people in the 20th century, continues to persecute countless political dissenters, Christians and other religious minorities; and has recently threatened to target and destroy U.S. cities with nuclear-tipped ICBMs. Military collaboration with the Chinese regime will not diminish the security threat it poses to the United States but, if anything, heightens it.

IMPORTANT FOLKS FLEE RED ARMY

Everyone in Emma’s community knew that the skeleton line of soldiers was not expected to hold her city of Loshan, Szechuan, in Western China. Their efforts made only a delaying tactic, buying time for some of the important folks to escape into the wild mountain areas beyond. For several weeks trucks had been leaving town, in the dark night, by back roads. They were loaded with wealthy people or officials and their families, many of them fleeing ahead of the oncoming Red Army. In America, these folks flee to underground bunkers prepared for just them.

Like Americans during the Great Depression of the 30s with rations and other inconveniences, through the centuries the Chinese people had learned to adjust to whatever came. The close living together in large families had taught the importance of personal adjustments. Like in America, most of the common people had no political interest and we are now reaping the consequences of that neglect. In their area they were used to changing allegiance as one warlord after another extended his rule and collected their taxes, sometimes for years in advance. The people were ready to accept the inevitable and cooperate with a new government. But they disliked change and hoped to continue in the old accustomed ways.

Of course, in America it is one president after another who makes promises they never keep and before the income tax is even due, I.R.S. requires employers to withhold money from the checks of employees months in advance and employers are required to file quarterly reports.

Along with a few other missionaries, Emma elected to stay in West China. Most were single women or older people without responsibility for families of little children. The West China U.S. Consulate in Chungking was closed and they were advised to leave; however, they were also given the privilege of remaining if they understood that they were on their own and that there would be no government personnel to come to their aid in case of trouble. Her Mission Board likewise gave them the choice of staying on if they were fully understood that they might be cut off with no chance of receiving a salary or any other help from outside.

In China, Emma’s Chinese name was “Kay-Teacher” and the children adored her. But as the hate- America campaign continued, the police made it clear to the children they had to shout ugly slogans to her. Soon she found it easier not to go outdoors anymore.
