Why Was Homeland Security Hiring 65,000 “Escort Services for Unaccompanied Alien Children” in January?

There are thousands of children flooding across the southern border. On June 2nd, the Washington Times said there were 60,000 unaccompanied children expected to try to cross the border, just this year.

On June 6, the Portland Press Herald, said “The surge of single parents and children has surprised and overwhelmed border agents in the Southwest – particularly Texas” and said the dumping of illegals in different states wasn’t a change in policy, but an attempt “to accommodate the unexpected numbers.”

On June 9, the L.A. Times called the surge “large and unexpected.”

The question I have is, if this is all “unexpected,” why was the Department of Homeland Security hiring “Escort Services for Unaccompanied Alien Children” in January?

Here’s an interesting part of the posting:

There will be approximately 65,000 UAC in total: 25% local ground transport, 25% via ICE charter and 50% via commercial air.

That’s jsut about what the Washington Times reported. So, this isn’t really unexpected, is it?

The SHTF blog asks some good questions:

How did the U.S. government know that this influx of immigrants was going to happen?

And, why did they fail to deploy the National Guard to secure the porous border in anticipation of hundreds of thousands of people illegally crossing into the United States?

If there’s a good explanation for this, I’d love to hear it.
