The Miracle that is Glen Campbell

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The documentary, Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me,” captures both the meteoric rise of Glen Campbell to stardom as a Country Western recording artist and the poignancy of his goodbye tour as both an ambassador and as a victim of Alzheimer’s disease. Directed by James Keach (“I Walk The Line”) and produced by Susan Disney Lord and Jane Seymour in conjunction with Volunteers of America and PCH Films, “I’ll Be Me” airs on CNN on June 28th, 2015 at 9pm and 11pm Eastern-Standard Time. This moving documentary, which is 104 minutes in length, chronicles the musician’s 2012 tour across the United States as his memory, of everyday moments, dissipates. Surrounded by his family, including his beautiful daughter named Ashley who played guitar and banjo in his band, and his patient and caring wife named Kimberley who constantly tries to reinforce the threads from the fabric of what had been Campbell ‘s magical life, this documentary is a testament to what is and is not possible in a person’s life when they have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. “I’ll Be Me” includes interviews with Glen Campbell’s crew, who knew him before the onset of the disease, other family members including his mother and his sisters, and the loved ones of other Alzheimer’s victims.
While “I’ll Be Me” captures through brief film clips Glen Campbell’s rise to superstardom as a singer and as a guitar player of such classics as “Gentle On My Mind”, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”, “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Galveston”; and recounts his success as the host of a the variety show (The Glen Campbell Good Time Hour) from 1969 thru 1972, the documentary fails to discuss Campbell’s success as a film actor particularly in “True Grit” also starring John Wayne and Kim Darby. Another weakness in the documentary is the docudrama’s tendency to dwell on the tediousness as well as uncertainty of life with and as an Alzheimer’s sufferer. A third weakness is the failure of the documentary to replay a significant amount of vintage Glen Campbell performances so much so that our taste buds are saturated (I definitely wanted to hear more.)
Having said this, “I’ll Be Me” does a remarkably good job of demonstrating not only the talent and musical genius of Glen Campbell , but the miracle which the man was despite suffering from Alzheimer’s. He is still brilliantly able to share his gift with the public in Venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and The Library of Congress; and at locations as diverse as Washington D.C., Chicago, Illinois and Napa Valley, California. The man also has a remarkable sense of humor and ability to communicate, with his associates and audiences alike, which does not fail him throughout his 2012 goodbye tour. Also impressive in the film are the two beautiful songs called “Remembering” written and performed by Ashley Campbell and “I’m not gonna miss you” movingly performed by Campbell on his last album.
This film does much to shed light on the destructive nature of Alzheimer’s disease  and to explain why the disease is so debilitating. It also does a very good job of explaining why it is important for the loved one’s of  sufferers to surround those afflicted with memories while also helping victims of the disease to remain physically and mentally active for as long as possible.

On a scale of from one thru ten stars, I rate GLEN CAMPBELL…I’LL BE ME a 9.5!
