Boots on the Ground?
It is often said that Americans don’t want a “boots on the ground” foreign policy strategy. Take a look at some recent polling via Gallup:
Since the Islamic State terrorist attacks in Paris and Beirut, Americans’ reaction to sending U.S. ground troops to assist groups fighting Islamic militants has shifted from majority opposition to an even divide. Forty-seven percent of Americans now favor committing U.S. ground troops to Iraq and Syria for this purpose, while 46% are opposed. In early November, opponents surpassed supporters by 10 percentage points.
Public opinion is certainly shifting. Many are likely seeing that the current strategy isn’t working. Also, when something horrific and frightening happens on a large scale as did in Paris, it serves as a reminder that we must be vigilant in this war with people who seeks to destroy us. Memories of our own 9/11 re-emerge.
Some questions to think about…
Given this shift, which presidential candidates inspire confidence?
Does this shift mean more polling trouble for Rand Paul’s foreign policy ideology?
Will foreign policy be the key issue alongside the economy this election cycle?
What do you want to hear from the GOP candidates when it comes to US counter-terrorism strategy?
