Mother of All Bombs Denounced as Sexist

When discussing the 22,000-pound bomb that was dropped on ISIS in Afghanistan yesterday, remember that MOAB stands for Massive Ordnance Air Blast. Do not refer to it as the Mother of All Bombs. That would be sexist:

If naming a football team the Washington Redskins is racist, then calling the GBU-43 the Mother of All Bombs is sexist — which is cruelly ironic when considering its role in the patriarchy:

Actually, it is a common practice to call the biggest or most impressive of something the “mother of all…” The origins of this idiom bring us back to bombing terrorists:

Saddam Hussein birthed it into the international consciousness in January 1991 when, on Baghdad radio, he referred to coming ground fight between Iraq and the U.S. at the end of the Gulf War as the “mother of all battles.” As Business Insider noted, he may have derived the phrase from the Koran, which refers to the holy city of Mecca as “Umm al-Qura” — the “mother of all settlements.” …

Despite these roots — and despite the fact that the “mother of all battles” lasted less than 100 hours, as Stars and Stripes noted — Americans quickly adopted the phrase.

But use of the term “mother of all,” despite it being the American Dialect Society’s 1991 word of the year, is now sexist, so you must refrain.
