European Union to Blow One-Fifth of Budget on Global Warming

Imagine if religious zealots took power and proclaimed that one-quarter of the public budget would be devoted to building a golden staircase into the heavens so that Jesus could descend, on the grounds that even if He doesn’t arrive via the staircase, it will be a nice gesture. People would regard it as an outrageous waste of money. Yet they put up with the European Union. According to its new plans, 25% of the budget goes to global warming:

Under the new proposals, covering the period between 2021 and 2027, a total of $383.2 billion will be spent on climate adaptation and mitigation, an increase of $136.5 billion.

Under the current budget, $246.7 billion is already being spent out to 2020 on combating climate change through investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy, environmental protection, and other carbon reduction schemes.

That brings global warming up from 20% to 25% of the total budget.

The odds of this resulting in a perceptible improvement in the weather are about the same as Jesus descending the golden staircase.
