Bystanders Take Cell Phone Video Rather Than Help Struggling Cop

These days, many people would rather take cell phone video of a possible tragedy than lift a finger to stop it. This appalling incident is emblematic:

Only one bystander came to the aid of a Houston police officer who was struggling with a combative 17-year-old armed robbery suspect, but several more stood around recording the altercation on their phones (video below).

One of the witnesses filming the altercation appeared to be a uniformed security guard.

“Help me!” the officer yelled to her, as the suspect reached for his duty weapon during the altercation. “Stop f–king filming and help me!”

The suspect, Davon Shavelle Miller, had been pulled over in connection with a shooting and aggravated robbery. Fortunately, he was subdued before he was able to get hold of the officer’s gun and kill him.

Miller also had a gun in his car, which his girlfriend wrapped up and threw in the bushes during the altercation. He was charged with felony disarming a police officer.

The racial makeup of the bystanders provides some insight into the challenges police face in trying to maintain order in diverse communities.

Maybe the Woman of Color in the security guard uniform who refused to help was hoping to produce viral video evidence that white police officers really do oppress put-upon black hoodlums, just like they say on TV.
