New Republic Demands an End to Automobiles

Firearms and automobiles mean the same thing in private hands: empowerment of the individual. That’s why authoritarian collectivists — i.e., progressives — seize on every opportunity to attack our constitutional right to bear arms. You didn’t need a crystal ball to see that soon they would come after cars too. A recent piece in the New Republic screams “The Modern Automobile Must Die”:

[T]he only way to achieve these necessary, aggressive emissions reductions to combat global warming is to overhaul the gas-powered automobile and the culture that surrounds it.

It is a matter of political faith that warm weather is a problem and that cars have anything to do with it.

In 2010, a NASA study declared that automobiles were officially the largest net contributor of climate change pollution in the world.

2010 was during the Obama administration, when the politicization of NASA reached such comical extremes that Administrator Charles Bolden declared the agency’s “foremost” mission to be Muslim outreach.

By “pollution,” they mean CO2, which is not only harmless by indispensable, as it makes the plants grow. Yet we are expected to quiver in terror as the liberal establishment gasps,

[T]ransportation is now the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States…

Interestingly, the piece acknowledges that this is about freedom:

[G]as-guzzlers symbolize nearly every cliche point of American pride: affluence, capability for individual expression, and personal freedoms.

No New Republic reader would indulge in something as gauche as American pride.

Another interesting admission is that electric cars create more emissions than regular cars if the electricity comes from burning coal. No one could seriously think sufficient electricity to keep millions of cars on the road could be generated by solar panels, wind turbines, pixie dust, etc.

When a failure to deal responsibly with mental illness combines with lack of security (and sometimes cowardly/incompetent law enforcement) to produce a school shooting, the liberal media bends over backward to channel everyone’s emotions into hatred for those who defend our right to bear arms. Expect a similar exploitation of traffic accidents. A taste of what’s to come:

[A]ccidents are among the leading causes of death in the United States. “If U.S. roads were a war zone, they would be the most dangerous battlefield the American military has ever encountered,” [The Atlantic’s Edward] Humes wrote. It’s getting more dangerous by the day.

At least they corrected the article so as not to state that Chrysler is a German automaker.
