1968: When paralleling just off the coast of North Carolina, Gladys was responsible for breaking the state’s worst drought since 1932, and proved more beneficial than the minor storm that occurred in the state. Elsewhere, Gladys was responsible for 11 deaths and $18.7 million (1968 dollars) in damages.

2004: Typhoon Tokage blasting across Japan triggers flash floods that wash away entire hillsides, killing 55 people and leaving at least 24 people missing.
