How California Can Impose 50-mpg Deathtraps on Us All

Wouldn’t it be horrible if no matter which state you call home, you had to live under the unreasonable dictates of the tyrannical lunatics running California? Hold on, maybe you do:

Trump walked back the pending federal fatwa that would have required all new cars to average 50-plus miles per gallon (MPG) by 2025, citing compliance costs and even (heresy!) questioning whether the government has any business fatwa’ing fuel efficiency requirements in the first place.

California responded with foot-stomping threats to issue its own counter-fatwa, which would impose the 50-plus MPG mandatory minimum on all new cars sold within its boundaries. If it does so, it would have the effect of making California the boss of the rest of us…

As automakers have learned starting back in the 1970s, California is too large a market to write off but not large enough to warrant its own line of cars. Consequently,

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the lobbying entity that represents most of the majors, including GM, Ford, Toyota, Mazda, VW/Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, issued a statement earlier this year urging Trump to “reach an agreement” with California that amounts to acceding to its demands.

Feeding the crocodile will not stop it from eating you. The auto industry has invested heavily in expensive electric cars that few people want, and would like Big Government to impose demand. But the end game for progressives is no cars at all. It isn’t harmless CO2 emissions they object to but the independence cars afford the individual.

In the meantime, the rest of us get to live under the heel of Jerry Brown et al.

The same situation applies to the corrosive moonbattery California dictates to school textbook manufacturers.

California independence might not be so good for California, but it would be wonderful for the rest of us. But then, the demographic transformation that recently converted California from Reagan Country into what it is now will eventually have the same effect on the nation as a whole if the floodgates are not closed against the encroaching Third World.
